
How to Troubleshoot High Differential Pressure in Baghouse Dust Collectors
High differential pressure is a common operating issue in baghouse dust collectors. It indicates increased resistance to airflow across the filter bags and may result in reduced suction, higher fan energy consumption, unstable dust capture, and shortened filter life. A gradual increase is normal as dust accumulates, but a continuously high or rapidly rising differential pressure requires investigation.
Check the Filter Cleaning System
The first step is to verify whether the pulse-jet cleaning system is working correctly. Check the compressed air supply, air pressure, solenoid valves, diaphragm valves, pulse controller, and blow pipes. Insufficient pressure, blocked air lines, damaged diaphragms, or incorrect pulse timing can prevent dust from being effectively removed from the bags. The compressed air should also be clean, dry, and free from excessive oil or moisture.
Inspect Filter Bags for Dust Loading
If the cleaning system is functioning normally but differential pressure remains high, inspect the filter bags. Excessive dust cake, moisture, sticky dust, or unsuitable filter media can restrict airflow through the bags. Filters should not be replaced simply because they look dirty; a stable dust cake is an important part of filtration. Replacement is generally necessary when the differential pressure remains above the system's specified operating limit and cannot be reduced through effective cleaning.
Check Airflow and Fan Operation
Excessive airflow can increase pressure drop and accelerate filter loading. Check the fan speed, damper position, system resistance, and actual airflow against the original design conditions. Adjust the exhaust damper when necessary to maintain the recommended airflow. Operating above the design airflow can also shorten filter life.
Inspect the Hopper and Dust Discharge System
A blocked or overloaded hopper can cause collected dust to accumulate and re-enter the filter area. Check the rotary airlock, screw conveyor, discharge valve, and dust container to ensure continuous material removal. The hopper should not be used as long-term dust storage, and excessive accumulation can significantly increase differential pressure.
Verify the Differential Pressure Measurement
Before replacing filters, confirm that the pressure reading is accurate. Inspect the pressure sensing tubes, fittings, gauge, and controller for blockage, leakage, kinks, or loose connections. A faulty sensing system can produce an incorrect high-pressure alarm.
Preventive Maintenance
Regular monitoring of differential pressure provides an early warning of filter loading and cleaning-system problems. Record pressure-drop trends, inspect the cleaning system, maintain compressed-air quality, and keep the hopper discharge system operating correctly. For many baghouse applications, approximately 1–6 in. w.g. is a commonly observed operating range, but the correct limit should always be determined according to the specific collector design and manufacturer recommendations.
